Modeling Tips and Tricks

Remember...a Model Kit is just a suggestion!

Remember...a Model Kit is just a suggestion!

Remember...a Model Kit is just a suggestion!

Modeling is about vision and creativity, and expressing your own design ideas.  If you see a part from another model that would work with your current model - use it! Do not hold back in creating something new and different.  That is the joy of your modeling journey!

Important Don'ts

Remember...a Model Kit is just a suggestion!

Remember...a Model Kit is just a suggestion!

DO NOT... add any Additives

Don't add any fillers to the recommended tools of Super Glue or Kicker as this could cause harmful, inhalable gasses! We want to keep model building safe and fun!

Important DO's

Remember...a Model Kit is just a suggestion!

Unique Materials

Do...Purchase only Clear Glues

Model Cement and other non-clear items will turn your glue white - especially after the model sits for a while.

Unique Materials

Creativity is where it's at when it comes to modeling.  Don't limit yourself when thinking about materials to use to make your model the best.  For example, the "quilt pattern" foil which tops some coffee containers or nut cans can be used for:

  .  A firewall

  .  A headliner

  .  Interior panels

  .  Trunks

  .  Trailer Doors

  .  and so much more!

Just cut to fit and show off that super re-use skill!

Do...Enjoy the process

Modeling takes time and patience.  Enjoying the process to make your model look the best it can is the reward of building.  Do not rush the process.  Building a model should have a plan.  Create that plan and stick to it as you build.  Take your time, get the right tools, and enjoy yourself! Doing this will provide a satisfying lifetime hobby.

Do...Pay attention to where your hands and fingers are

Always be conscious of where your fingers and hands are.  Using sharp blades and tools with sharp edges are dangerous and must be handled with concentration and care.

Appropriate sharp tools do the work for you so that you don't work hard using them.  Guide your tools to assure the best experience.  Don't struggle with them.

The Ideal Model Building Toolkit

Do you want to start building models? Here are the tools you should have for the best modeling experience!

Toolkit Essentials

--

  • Assorted nail files (varied coarseness from fine to gritty)
  • Needle Nose Mini-Pliers (Plastic Cutting Nippers)
  • Toe Nail Clipper (yes - not joking!)
  • Sandpaper (assorted coarseness from fine to gritty)
  • Paint Brushes (from fine tip to quarter-inch tip)
  • Modeling Knife with Sharp Blade (make sure to have extra blades)
  • Clear Adhesive / Sticky Tape
  • Magnifying Glass (headband or mounted on movable stand)
  • Dremel-style Battery Operated Tool
  • First Aid Kit (accidents happen - be prepared!)
  • A Clean Working Surface

Super Glue

--

Sometimes model parts don't line up. When that occurs, you need have a gap filled which visually looks like no gap exists.  This is where Super Glue comes in.

"Kicker"

--

This product activates Super Glue so it cures in about 30 seconds.  This will be a huge time saver when building your model.  Note...this should not be sprayed on!

Clear Drying Modeling Cement

--

There are varying viscosities of glue such as thin, extra thin, and super thin.  As you progress in your modeling abilities you will find what one you like most which works best for your style.      Keep in mind- using too much glue on a model never ends well!

Putting it Together

Now that you have your tools ready, let's build!

Custom Parts Alignment and Tape

--

First, take your parts which you need to align, and stage them so that you have them ready.  Trim some of the excess plastic and put a piece of Scotch Tape over these parts.  You will be building a "dam" of sorts where the Super Glue and Kicker will sit as it sets.

Apply Kicker

--

Once you have your parts aligned and tape applied, fill the gap between the aligned parts with Super Glue and a bit of Kicker

Use Files

--

Files can help smooth out super glue and kicker joints, smaller plastic joints, and may save on a some sandpaper use.

Sand off the Excess

--

You've aligned your parts, you've glued them together, and remove the tape (once Super Glue and Kicker are cured).  Now, you can take sand paper to finish off the surface of your glued parts (400 and finer will work - depending on the desired finish you want for your model inner workings to have).  This will give your model a fantastic finish and hold, and assure your alignment is spot-on!

Creating a Glass-Like Look

--

If you are building a model car with great interior details, that means a dashboard will have gauges which you want people to see.  A way to enhance your dashboard visibility is to place it on a flat, level surface and apply a drop of clear glue on the gauge (or gauges).  Allow the glue to dry overnight.  In the morning, you will see what appears to be glass on your gauges which creates a very neat and detailed look.

Amazing Custom Finish

--

Using these tools and applying these pro methods will allow your creativity to soar! You can take many different parts of various models, and combine them into YOUR vision of YOUR model vehicle!
